Alcohol & U: Fraternity & Sorority Life Education

Alcohol & U Part 3 Information

Student Wellness is pleased to be partnering with Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) again to provide an in-person, educational opportunity addressing alcohol education. After another great year of participation of Alcohol & U, we are happy to continue year 3, emphasizing understanding challenges that students face and how to support a friend.

Student Wellness's philosophy is to provide realistic and relevant information to our students while providing harm reduction strategies to reduce the harm of alcohol-related consequences. We frame our programming to include those who choose to drink and those who choose not to, because both can provide valuable insight on this very important topic.

Based off feedback from participants and staff, we are planning to increase engagement by creating small groups within the training for more quality activities and discussion.

For Alcohol & U to be the highest quality for all participants, a positive learning environment is requested. That includes...

  • a projector, monitor/screen, internet are ready for the Student Wellness staff member upon arrival
  • a space where everyone is able to sit in a chair
  • a seating arrangement where participants can easily move to sit in small groups (in a circle would be best)

If you’d like to reserve a space at the IMU or another academic building, we are happy to assist you with that.

Alcohol & U Part 3 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Alcohol & U?

Alcohol & U is an interactive presentation facilitated by Student Wellness staff members in partnership with FSL. The material of this year’s Alcohol & U is focused on connection, belonging, and supporting a friend. The presentation includes a large group discussion, small group activities, with one role playing activity. The presentation is 1.5 hours long. If your chapter was identified as having close or more than 100 members, those chapters are expected to host two, separate, back to back trainings to improve the participant's experience and allow better discussion. For those chapters, the presentation slot will be three hours.

My organization did this last year, do we have to do it again?

Last year's Alcohol & U was a different version, so even if your chapter did the training last year, it wasn't the same content. Beginning in spring 2025, organizations must reach 80% of their total chapter to meet the standard and 90% to exceed the standard for participation. 17 chapters were invited this semester and all need to complete the training by the end of April 2025. Please sign your organization up as soon as possible.

How many members need to attend?

All of your members need to attend. Many chapters have scheduled the training during their regular meeting time, and condense the agenda of their typical meeting. This seems to work really well.
